I'm spending a few Days in Tenochtitlan. My cousin is getting married and she would love for me to come. She is only 16 and has no say in the matter, because that is the age girls must get married in this city. Men have to be 20, and that's the age of her husband to be. There might be another wedding in their lives's, as her husband can take another wife.
Before they get married, they celebrate with a banquet at the brides house. The food was Yummy. Some of the other wife's would hand make the food, and some of the food was bought at the markets. The food was colorful and festive!
In the evening the actual ceremony was held at the grooms house, the whole wedding party marched over there. There was a old women that carried the bride on her back, I think it was the match marker. The groom was wearing a cloak. The Old women tied the grooms cloak to the brides blouse, that would symbolize the bond between the two.
For four days they would pray and be by themselves. On the fifth day they came out and were given a huge banquet witch they would eat again and started there lives on a piece of land given by the groom.
I was surprise that device was allowed in this society. My cousin husband could divorce her if she was cranky or did not work hard. My cousin could divorce him if he beat her or left or fail to take Care of her and her children. I hope this will never happen, and i wish them a happy life.
